This beautiful and ancient region is situated on the North Eastern corner of Italy, only 1 hour drive from Venice. This secret and secluded region is luckily less known and maintains a strong regional identity and culture. The history of Friuli is quite particular, given its geographic, ethnical, and cultural location as a frontier hub between central Europe to the north, the Slav regions to the east and the Italian Peninsula to the west and south.
Around 1000 B.C., the Illyrian built fortified villages creating a basic social structure, but with the arrival of the Romans, the land and society was restructured following the Roman model. They built roads, introduced new flora, parcelled up the land for cultivation and founded cities, of which Aquileia and Cividale del Friuli are a valuable example that have survived to the present days.
The region has a thousand year tradition of artistic mosaic making which dates back to pre-Roman times. The mosaics inside the still functioning basilica of Aquileia, which was built by the Romans, are excellent examples of this ancient art.
Fruili is one of Italy’s most versatile regions able to satisfy tastes of everyone with snow-capped mountains, warm sandy beaches, remote alpine hamlets, Roman ruins, palatial country villas, rocky coastal cliffs and picturesque fishing villages.
Friuli Region is also known for its remarkable and picturesque wine district “Collio”, where exceptional white and red wines are produced such as Chardonnay, Pinot Bianco, Sauvignon, Verduzzo, Malvasia (white wines) and Cabernet, Melot, Pinot Nero (red wines).

Udine is a magnificent town, elegant and wealthy with beautiful buildings, churches, piazzas, cafès, restaurants and shops. Ideal location for a private wedding ceremony far from tourists and crowds. Highly recommend is also the antique Lombard village of Cividale del Friuli built by Caesar Augustur in 50 BC.
