The palazzo was begun in the 13th century and designed by Arnolfo di Cambio. Its massive bulk and towering campanile dominate the piazza.

Civil wedding ceremonies in Florence are held in the beautiful Sala Rossa (Red Hall) once the bedroom of Cosimo de Medici. This hall is a wonderful specimen of Renaissance décor and furnishing: imagine marvellous red drapes and a giant
