Venue description
Built around 1500 by a famous architect and sculptor, this villa is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful existing specimens of sixteenth-century architecture and one of the most important of the properties owned by an ancient family from Lucca, which died out in the eighteenth century.
It is the only villa in the Lucca area whose portico (in Matraia stone) is two-storeys high, a feature as unusual as the two halls stretching from South to North, one above the other, in the main body of the building. The villa has gone from owner to owner and the present ones took extensive renovation and restoration work.
To the north of the villa, the park is characterised by an amphitheatre of holm-oaks, a folly with jeux d'eau, statues and marble vases. To the south, instead, it unfolds on three different levels: the middle one is characterised by a driveway flanked with cypresses leading to the main gate, a parallel gallery of horn-beams, a fountain called 'of the cascades' adorned with bas-relief and terracotta statues, a holm-oak Coffee House with a stone table and benches; the upper one boasts several fountains, a lemon-house, a hot-house, a tennis-court and a horn-beam thicket used for bird-catching; the lower level - now housing a collection of Eucalyptus - acted, up to a short time ago, as a riding-track whose course was outlined with pear-trees and used to be, in times bygone, a hortus conclusus.
